Metro station Argyroupoli

At the "Argyroupoli" metro station the only access to the west exit was a botched and with inadequate dimensions sidewalk that violates national and European law (see photo). According to Greek standards (Government Gazette 2621B/2009) the free of obstacles width of a sidewalk should be 1.50 meters (which corresponds to a total width of more than 2 meters) and according to international standards even bigger - eg. the OECD recommends an obstacles free width of 1.80-2.00 meters and on sidewalks with commercial traffic, bus stops etc. (as in this case) over 3.00-3.50 meters. The sidewalk in question had in none point such dimensions, it was full of obstacles, and in many places the useful for pedestrians width was less than half a meter, so that it would not allow for two people to cross, nor of course the use of wheelchairs or infants. Project developers, finished the station after a three-year delay (so there was all the time required), spent tens of millions euros on its construction, but failed to make it safe and operational by securing a decent access that would cost some thousands of euros and a few tens of meters of expropriations.

After another three years, and following the outcry, the administration "corrected" the sidewalk. However, the "corrected" sidewalk, in a large part, again does not have the legal and necessary dimensions for use from vulnerable pedestrians and is less than 1.50 meters wide!

During the construction phase no safety rules were observed for the protection of pedestrians: the sign in the photo sents them to the non-existent sidewalk in the opposite side of the road (without crossings, traffic signs, etc.)!

The administration insists that a 70cm pavement is enough for use by people with disabilities. The National Mediator (dubbed in the Greek administration jargon with the euphimistical term "Citizen's Advocate") has no objection
