Renovations and interventions in the urban fabric of the Municipality of Daphne (project 215876)

The project concerns the redevelopment of the area encompassed by Agia Varvara, Papanastasiou, Alexandria and Arkadi streets. The sidewalks, throughout the intervention, have insufficient dimensions (obstacles free sidewalk width is less than 1.50 m). In the few cases where sidewalks were indeed widened, the widening was inadequate and the sidewalks are still unsuitable even for the ablebodied, and much more for the disabled people (e,g. photos 45, 56, 65). Of course the corridor for blind people has not been fitted as required by the regulations, since there is no space for it. Various obstacles, such as garbage bins (e.g. photos 19,23,24,27,28), posts (e.g. photos 23,26,51,65,67), inappropriate planting (e.g. photo 25) remained on the "renovated" sidewalks and made them even more unfit for pedestrian use. The bike lane of the area, instead of being built on a large street with high car traffic and in need of protection for cyclists (eg Papanastasiou or Vouliagmenis Avenue), it was constructed on a low-traffic street next to inadequate sidewalks (e.g. photos 1,3,4,5,13) and with some unacceptable slopes for bicycles (e.g. photo 14). Thus the bike path failed and is mainly used by pedestrians (eg photo 8,10,12) moving where it would be a normal sized sidewalk (and, illegally by cars, where this is possible, e.g. photo 70). A purely decorative project that does not at all improve the truly unacceptable conditions for safe pedestrian movement, and especially for people with disabilities.
